On Friday, Mama and Daddy encouraged Chase to go to school. He was coughing a little less, and they thought he could do. So what does Chase say? "Expect a call." But a call never came. He stuck it out the whole day. Mama came over to Nanaw's house on Friday morning, after she ran a lot of errands, including picking up the cookie cake and cupcakes for Chase's birthday party on Saturday, getting the cookie cakes for Chase to take to school on his birthday, getting lottery scratchers, going to the bank for Christmas money and taking her pups for a walk. Mama made fudge while Nanaw baked Christmas tree spritz cookies, pecan sandies and chewy noels. The chewy noels didn't turn out right -- maybe Nanaw left the butter in the oven too long or maybe it was the different pan -- larger and no-stick. But Nanaw figured out a way to roll the results into balls and cover them in powdered sugar. When Mama and Nanaw picked Chase up from school, they told the other grandmas about Mama's heated coat, and the ladies thought that was cool. Chase told us that some of the boys and girls and the teachers told Chase they were glad he was back in class. One of the girls told Chase they missed him at the band concert last night. Nanaw tried to get Chase to eat a Christmas tree cookie and a pecan sandy but he only ate Mama's fudge. He had a hockey game tonight but they lost 5 to 1. Mama said she was warm in her heated coat. Nanaw is going to Chase's hockey game tomorrow morning, then to his birthday party at a Ninja place, and then to Chase's house to visit with Jackson and his parents. When Mama brought Chase over to Nanaw's house on Thursday, morning, she was still hoping that Chase would go to school. But he kept coughing and coughing so it was better for him to stay home. Later in the morning, Mama called and said she thought she should take him to the doctor. She picked him up from Nanaw's house at 10 a.m. and told Nanaw to go do her grocery shopping while they were gone. Nanaw also went to he library, the post office, the bank, the gas station and the cemetery. Nanaw hadn't done those things the past few days because it kept raining. Nanaw was glad to get all her errands done. Chase doesn't  have flue, Covid or strep throat the doctor says. He got a flu shot an Mama said they had to get a second nurse in there to hold him while the other nurse gave him the shot. Nanaw picked Chase up about 1 p.m., and they went back to Nanaw's house to work on his homework that Mama had picked up from school. There was a lot of it -- studying for a Monday science test, reading questions, and a six-page math packet about owning your own movie theatre. They got everything done except studying for a Monday science test. They can do that tomorrow afternoon or Saturday or Sunday. Mama limited Chase's computer and tablet time, and he wasn't happy about that.

Chase stayed home from school again today. Mama said he coughed all night long and didn't get much sleep. Nanaw forgot to take her regular pills before bed and forgot to set her alarm. She had a horrible night's sleep and didn't wake up till 6:30. She told Mama she had a doctor's appointment, and Mama suggested that Chase stay home and Nanaw could pick him up when her appointment was over. So that's what they did. Chase's teacher put his work out in the box, and Mama went up to school to pick it up. Chase did all of the homework that he could do and the reading. He had done AR at home in the morning, and he did Narnia and Number the Stars in the afternoon. The teacher didn't send some of the stuff he needed to do all of his homework. At 4:30, Nanaw remembered that his Weekly Writing was due tomorrow so she had him work on it. When she read it over for him, she told Chase that he'd left out a lot of things, and that he could make it better. He refused and Nanaw refused to fight with him. When she took Chase home, she told Mama about the writing, and Chase got mad. Daddy talked to him and calmed him down, and he redid the writing. Mama said it was better but still not very good. Nanaw said that hopefully the teacher would make suggestions and comments, and Chase would pay attention to that.

Last night, Mama told Nanaw that Chase felt warm when she went in to say goodnight to him. Mama and Nanaw were both afraid that the bug was going to be sick today. But he wasn't, and everybody was very happy about that. When Nanaw picked Chase up from school, she made sure he had the religion paper he was supposed to work with Daddy on and the materials for his Reading test tomorrow. He said he wasn't sure he had a test tomorrow. So Nanaw was very confused because Homework Central said he had a quiz on Number the Stars on Wednesday. He worked on his homework, and it turned out that he had four or five pages to complete on Number the Stars, and that's what the test was going to be on. So Nanaw quizzed him on the pages as he got them done. Hopefully, he'll do well on the test. Tomorrow, Nanaw is going to Walmart, the library and the cemetery after her doctor's appointment. At Walmart, Nanaw is going to get some plastic folders for Chase to use, especially to replace his religion folder. The religion folder is in shreds. Nanaw will also probably do her grocery shopping tomorrow because she can't go Thursday evening because of the band concert.

When Mama brought Chase over to Nanaw's house Monday morning, she said he had an upset stomach and wasn't feeling well. She said to let her know if she should call the school to tell them he wouldn't be coming to school today. Chase said he said didn't feel well enough to go to school, so Nanaw texted Mama to make the call. Nanaw had Chase lay down on Pawpaw's bed to rest for a while. He ate some crackers a couple of times. At noon, he ate the Lunchable that he had been going to have for lunch at school. The school lunch was sausage and eggs -- and Chase does not like eggs -- so he was going to take his lunch. Around noon, he announced to Nanaw that he now felt fine but that he couldn't go to school because there were only a couple of classes left in the day. Mama drove up to school to get Chase's homework out of the "box." The "box" is outside the school and it's where teachers place work and homework for students aren't at school that day. Chase and Nanaw did his homework, and then he played on the computer.

Chase and Daddy went to church on Sunday morning, and Chase said he saw some of his friends, including Henry. But he couldn’t remember any of the others. Nanaw came over to Chase’s house for dinner in the evening. Chase and Nanaw sat at the kitchen table while Mama finished fixing dinner. Dinner was Italian beef and Mama’s special buttered rice dish. Everything was delicious. After dinner, they all went downstairs for family movie night. Mama wanted to watch Christmas Vacation. The movie is a Christmas tradition for Mama. In the middle of the movie, Mama made popcorn, although she was full from dinner and didn’t eat any popcorn. Chase watched some of the movie and seemed to like it. He also played hockey on the floor in front of the TV, and played with his tiny hockey rink and his little football players. Toward the end of the movie, he asked Mama if he could get his tablet; she said yes so he went upstairs to get it.

Chase had a hockey game on Saturday morning, and unfortunately, they lost 4 to 1. But Mama and Daddy said Chase played really well. In the afternoon, Mama and Daddy picked up Nanaw, and they went to Uncle Mike and Aunt Becky's Christmas party. Chase's cousins (and Nanaw's grandchildren) Joey, Robbie and Lindsey were there, along with Robbie's girlfriend Claudia and friends of Joey, Robbie and Lindsey. Lots of Aunt Becky's relatives were there also. There was lots of delicious food to eat. The downstairs was awesome. They had it all decorated for the party. Chase was most excited about the air hockey table. He and Daddy played for a long time after they got there and then again later in the party. Nanaw played with Chase also, and that was fun. Irina also played air hockey with Chase. Cousin Mikey called from California and said he'd be here on December 24. He's coming to Nanaw's for Christmas dinner. Uncle Mike also had the ping pong table set up, and Chase played with cousin Joey's friend John. Chase and Nanaw sat in the recliner chairs and played on their tablets for a while. It was a great party -- the best ever, as Nanaw always says. The first two pictures are of Chase standing in front of Aunt Becky's wonderful penguin Christmas decorations.
