Chase and Nanaw stayed home on Monday because the man was coming to cut down the two dead trees at the back of Nanaw's house. Chase was very interested in what was going on. He kept going out on the upper deck and watching the men climb the trees and cut off the branches. He also went out on the lower deck to get a better look at what they were doing on the ground. Chase and Nanaw played downstairs with his trains and in the schoolroom. One of the things Nanaw did was to sew the ears of one of Chase's backup Tee Tees -- show in the first picture below. Upstairs, they sat at the kitchen counter and Chase wrote his name and Mama's name. Then Nanaw got out the set of flashcards that have simple words on them, and they practiced with those. Chase's favorite word is umpire, of course. Chase's kindergarten teacher Mrs. Hermann says she's going to be sending home flashcards all year long of what she calls "sight words" -- that means words that are not easily sounded out and that the children need to learn by sight. When Nanaw took Chase home, Daddy had some exciting surprises for him. Daddy bought Chase soccer shoes, soccer socks, soccer shin guards and a new soccer ball. Chase's soccer practice starts this coming Saturday. Daddy put the socks, shin guards and shoes on Chase, and everybody went outside to watch Chase and Daddy play soccer. Nanaw thinks Chase is going to really like soccer because there's so much action and motion.
